Canada Gets No Respect…in the TSP

Oh Canada, our brothers and sisters to the north.  Some of us in the U.S. almost look to Canada as a 51st state, given that most of its population speaks English without an overly discernable accent, that the country provides a significant proportion of U.S.-based actors, singers, and comedians, and that Canadian coins sometimes appear in U.S. cash registers. But alas, despite its positive economic prospects in contrast to the U.S. and elsewhere (see below), TSP investors cannot invest there … more

Markets and the Presidential Election Year Cycle

Ever noticed how many of the memorable market declines have taken place in September or October?  The great crash of 1929 began as a slow slide in September, and in mid-October the crash hit in earnest.  By mid-November the U.S. stock market had fallen by almost half. The Pulp Fiction Fed And Your TSP

One of my favorite films is “Pulp Fiction.”  The Quentin Tarantino movie resurrected John Travolta’s career and further elevated the career of the young Uma Thurman. In one major plot line, hitman Vincent Vega – John Travolta – is charged with entertaining the wife of his mob boss while he is out of town. The wife, Mia Wallace (Uma Thurman), is easily bored and flirtatious, an obviously dangerous combination in a mob family.  Having heard the rumors of what happened … more

Deadbeat Dad? Malefactor Momma? Your TSP is in Jeopardy

For those not paying child support, beware!  Your TSP account is in jeopardy.  While TSP investments are safe from garnishment or most other legal process, unpaid child support is an exception. According to the Office of Child Support Enforcement (OCSE), an office of the Department of Health and Human Services, 86,000 federal employees owe child support. Nationwide according to the OCSE, there were 11.3 million child support cases that were in arrears, of which over 7 million had collections in FY … more
